What is Ammolite?

Ammolite is an iridescent layer cut from the fossilized shells of a prehistoric creature, called ammonite. These squid-like creatures lived about 65 million years ago at the same time as the dinosaurs. The gem is mostly composed of aragonite, the same mineral which along with calcium makes pearls. Ammolites are among the oldest organic gems in the world—so old in fact that during the time they formed there were only two large landmasses on Earth: Gondwana and Laurasia.

The beautiful iridescence which gives Ammolite its appearance comes from thin microscopic layers that make up the replaced aragonite in the ammonite shell. The more layers, the more color you’ll see. Although Ammolites can be found in any color, green and red are two of the most prevalent.

Ammolite’s power

Known as the gem of enlightenment, Ammolite is believed to awaken positive energy. The ancient practice of Feng Shui teaches Ammolite to be the “prosperity stone of seven colors.” It is believed that the gem’s beautiful colors represent life’s balance, with each color associated with certain benefits.

Red is associated with Love, Orange, with Creativity while Yellow brings Wealth, Green fosters Wisdom. Blue brings Good Health, Indigo promotes Peace and Violet enhances Growth and Energy.

Where can we find Ammolite?

Ammolite can be found in various places around the world, but there’s only one location where fine quality Ammolite has been discovered: A very small area in Alberta, Canada.

Only about 5% of the Ammolites found here are suitable as gems. Because of the unique geological conditions which helped make it, Ammolite is a precious and rare gift from Nature. However, because of its rarity, beauty, and high demand, it has been estimated that Ammolite will run out within the next twenty years.
